Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) népszerű tévébemondó a Channel 7 esti híradójában. Barátnője, Grace (Jennifer Aniston) rajong érte. Mindezek ellenére a férfi örökké elégedetlenkedik sorsával. Egy új műsorhoz keresnek vezetőt, de végül is nem őt választják. Elszabadul a pokol: kirúgatja magát, verekedik és egy nap alatt tönkremegy magánélete is. Istent kezdi el hibáztatni mindezért. Az Úr (Morgan Freeman) megjelenik előtte egy érdekes ember képében és okulásul átadja minden hatalmát a káromló tévésnek. Bruce-nak tetszik a korlátlan hatalom lehetősége és elfogadja az ajánlatot. A városban mindenki hozzá imádkozik és neki mondja el lelke legsötétebb titkait! Bruce megpróbál minden igényt kielégíteni, de hamar rájön, hogy Isten feladata nem is olyan könnyű! Grace elköltözik tőle és Bruce megtapasztalja, hogy sok mindent megváltoztathat, de a szabad akarat ellen nem tehet semmit. Azaz csak őszinte emberként, kemény munkával hódíthatja vissza szerelmét.
